Message from the President:

First, thank you for the trust placed in me for this coming year as I begin my term as MCMA president.  Taking the helm of an organization like this in the middle of a global pandemic is a daunting challenge, but one I hope to live up to in the days ahead.  Normally, this message would be delivered in-person at our Spring Conference in May.  However, it goes without saying that the past year has been one of the most challenging in the history of this organization and the communities we serve, as our world has been dramatically affected by COVID-19.  Due to the pandemic, our organization has not gathered for training or fellowship since January 2020 and many of us have not had an in person Board of Aldermen or City Council meeting in that time.

Despite those challenges, I hope to accomplish several goals and start a tradition or two while in office. One of the traditions that I hope to establish is giving each presidential term a theme. Reflecting on our current circumstances, I was able to identify a simple but powerful message for my theme: “Do the Work.”

“The Work” in our communities is guiding economic recovery and bringing people back together who have been driven apart during this difficult time. “The Work” in our organization is a continued focus on our strategic plan and completing the goals and objectives laid out within its pages. As we slowly begin our return to normalcy, I intend to provide leadership to achieve MCMA’s internal goals, once again provide educational and networking opportunities to better help us achieve our communities’ goals and continue to make MCMA a more inclusive organization.

MCMA cannot be a successful organization without the involvement of its members. This year, more than ever, we need your help to “Do the Work” of the organization and move us forward. There are eight committees open for any full member to apply to join. Rather than just sending out an email to call for committee volunteers, we have created a form on the MCMA website where you can identify your interest and read about each committee and its work plan assignment for the year. Committee participation is an excellent opportunity to get to know members from around the state and serves as an opportunity to learn more about MCMA and its activities, should you be interested in being a member of the Board of Directors in the future. You can read more about our committee opportunities and volunteer here:

Finally, I want to say thank you and job well done to Roger Haynes, our immediate past president. Roger’s term as president was significantly impacted by COVID-19, including the cancelation of both the Spring Conference and Winter Workshop during his year. Despite it all, Roger never complained or cursed his luck, instead remaining a happy warrior and setting a high standard of achievement for all of us to follow.

Best wishes and see everyone in September at the MML Conference!
